PRESS RELEASE: It has become pertinent for the management of Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) to respond to the news making rounds on a traffic infraction by a vehicle conveying a High Court Judge of Edo state.
On the 17th of November, 2022, our men and officers stationed at Mission road in Benin City were managing traffic flows due to the high volume of commercial activities in the axis and ensuring vehicles comply with the instructions of traffic lights in order not to cause untold hardship for road users.
While these were going on smoothly, some recalcitrant drivers ran the Red-Light at Navis junction at Mission road. Amongst the vehicles contravened was a SUV (Prado) with registration number EE998BEN, Black Colour. The SUV almost knocked down one of our officers while trying to bring it to a stop and to read the traffic offence to the driver. In order not to be knocked down by the driver, our officer moved away to save his life, however part of his body still had contact with the side mirror of the vehicle leading to its breakage and injury by our officer.
The driver of the said SUV didn’t stop but escaped from the scene and was trailed by our patrol van and later apprehended at Sapele road. While our officers were still making efforts to enforce the traffic law, the occupants of the vehicle highlighted and were immediately joined by others invited by them.
They assaulted our Officers and forcefully took them to the premises of the State High Court at Sapele road where they were further subjected to humiliation and ridicule.
It was later discovered that the contravened vehicle had a serving High Court Judge as the occupant and owner of the vehicle.
EDSTMA as an agency enabled by law will not do anything outside the law. It is trite that all citizens are subject to the law especially the gatekeepers of the law in order to portray good ambassadors worthy of emulation by the commoners and to build confidence in the system devoid of lawlessness and it’s very important to note that; EDSTMA doesn’t select people for punishment because our laws accommodates both the rich and the poor.
Our agency has already intimated the State Government of what had transpired and expected action on same according to laid down procedures/rules. We want to reassure Edo people that, the Agency have no preference for one citizen above another in the discharge of its responsibility.
