“Peace is the only battle worth waging.”

– Albert Camus

The number one need of every Human being on the surface of the earth is Peace. It is so important that each year, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. This year’s IDOP is themed, “End racism. Build peace.”

Some of the things that influences peace include;

• Respect; for self, evident in minding our business and conducting our affairs, as well as having respect for other people and their opinions, regardless of whether we agree with them or not.

• Communication methods, which encompasses what is being said, when it is said, and how it is said. This influences the choice of words used in communication. Even with the best of intentions, a poor selection of words could worsen agitations rather than resolve it.

• Timing: When a thing is said can affect how much peace it can foster. Sometimes, we want to communicate salient issues but the timing makes it odd and brings about anger, disagreement and ruckus, leading to a severe breakdown of peace that was initially sought after.

The 5 Ws & 1 H (Why, Who, What, Where, When and How) plays a major role in influencing how peace is brokered between parties from day to day, be it a minuscule domestic conflict to earth-shaking conflicts between Nations.

Peace is a function of tolerance (the ability or practice accepting or being patient with the beliefs, opinions or practices of others, as divergent as they may come). We must cultivate the habit of respecting something, even if we may not regard it. While respect is having high regard for something, they must not be misconstrued. For peace to be brokered, tolerance is required.

As humans, we must be tolerant of one another, regardless of differences in gender, ethnicity, religion, political leanings, race, social status, economic status, culture and age, because we want peace to thrive. The benefits of peace far outweigh the risks and as Albert Camus said, it is the only war worth waging.

Happy International Day of Peace.
