I want to welcome you all to this historic occasion of this programme which will kick off in my senatorial district today. This programme is very dear to my heart as we intend to bring health care services to the door step of our people.
This programme is jointly organised by the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria and inconjunction with my Senatorial office.
The conceptual design of this programme is to provide specialised services to locations outside the normal service catchment areas of our communities.
Suffice to say that, the elimination of needless blindness in our communities has always been a burden and of great concern to me ,hence the prime objective behind this outreach. The introduction of this ideal ( Medical Eye Outreach Program) has a major paradigm shift in the planning and delivery of eye care services. For many of us in the legislative chambers, it’s an urgent call to move quickly in reaching out to as many as we can in delivering professional services in the poorest and neediest part of our communities where service delivery is quite often synonymous with dysfunctional infrastructure and limited access to existing eye care services.
I make bold to say that this programme will be sustained and enhanced in making eye care services available to our people who live far from eye care professionals. I intend to legislate a bill for the training and integration of primary eye workers into the existing primary health care systems. Under this arrangement a resident of each community will be identified and trained to carry out eye care services.
I want to at this point declare this weeks long program opened. I further encourage everyone to actively participate in this laudable program of eye treatment, diagnosis and provision of customised medicated eye glasses.
Finally, my sincere thanks to our guests lecturer, management and staff of Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN), our distinguish guest and our dear fathers and mothers.
Thank you all for your time.
God bless, Esan Land!
