Ugbegun 30th March, 2022.
The Socio-economic importance of Esan Central Local Government Area to Edo State and Nigeria has been x-rayed by an illustrious indigene of the Local Government Area, Joyce Daniels Oamen.
In a seminar paper on the topic titled, “The Heart of The Heartbeat”, the public speaker dissected the strategic importance of the Local Government Area drawing heavily from it’s location advantage – being the gateway to the North, East and Western Nigeria. She also sited human and natural resources endowed on the area that only require good leadership and management for the LGA to unleash it’s full potentials.
Below is the full details of the seminer work as posted on joycedaniels.com, and made available to Urban Scoop Media in Ugbegun, Esan Central LGA of Edo State. Excerpt:
Esan Central is one of the 18 Local Government Areas found in Edo State. Its administrative headquarters is Irrua, which is the largest city of Esan Central. The Esan Central people are an ethnic group of southern Nigeria, who speak the Esan language.
Politically, Esan Central is divided into ten (10) geo-political wards. The land has four (4) kingdoms, which are; Irrua, Ewu, Opoji, and Ugbegun.
Esan Central people are traditionally known to be agriculturists, trado-medical practitioners, mercenary warriors, hunters and so much more. Esan Central people are known to be friendly and accommodating to visitors and foreigners. The land boasts of the Mudiame University, Irrua, the Irrua Specialist Hospital, The Ewu Flour Mills, The School of Nursing and Midwifery, Ewu Monastery, the Nigrian Advanced School of Theology and other great internationally knowned tourist locations.
For tourism, the land is well known for its tourist centers such as; Lake Obiemen, Obiemen Shrine, Ogirrua’s Palace, Ugbalo Springs, Omobor River, Ugbalo Water works, just to name a few. Due to its arable lands and fertile soil, the major agricultural produce of the land are; Yams, Tomatoes, Rice, Kola Nuts, Rubber, Oil Palm, Cassava, Oranges etc. The land also has natural resources such as Kaolin, Clay and Timber.
Geographically, Esan Central is located in the tropical zone mixed with Guinea Savannah in the Southern transition to Northern part of the country. This invariably means that Esan Central connects the South to the North. This connection ultimately brings us to the huge importance of Esan Central to Edo State and Nigeria as a whole.
The slogan for Edo State as we all know is ‘Heartbeat of the Nation’. This slogan rings truer when applied to Esan Central because, Esan Central is the heart of Edo State, the part of Edo State that connects the North to the South. For example, anyone traveling to Kogi State, which is a border state to Edo State, must pass through Esan land. Hence the slogan, ‘Esan Central; Heart of the Heart beat’.
With this established, let us now focus on how important the heart is to the human body. The heart is the lifeblood of the human body. It is connected to all parts of the human body and it’s importance and relevance cannot be overemphasized. Likewise Esan Central, which is the heart of the heart beat.
This thus means that, leadership in Esan Central is something of huge relevance not only to the Esan people, but also to Nigeria as a whole.
The heart of the heart beat needs sensitive leadership in every corner. It needs a professional who is a lover of people, one who is experienced and forward thinking, one who can attract investors into Esan land and has a good network of people, because Esan Central is key to both the Esan people and Nigeria as a whole. These super qualities are necessary for good and sustainable leadership in Esan land.
Now, let us talk about women inclusion in politics. It is no longer news today that in politics, women are marginalized. Whereas, research has shown that women inclusion in politics and governance garners a host of benefits.
The concern is not whether women lead better than men, the focus is that, women can lead as much as the men. However, statistics has shown that, in Esan Central for example, there is a huge gender gap because the ratio of men to women in its politics is 9:1. This statistic indirectly shows that, there are no capable women in Esan politics! A fallacy.
Now is the time for Change!
Esan Central has a host of educated, professional, exposed, intelligent, well-travelled and intellectual women who can bring about growth and sustainable development in Esan land.
Think about it.
